Third Year Test Grades

Dear Third Year,

Here are your test grades for Tests 1 & 2, December 2021:

Tr>En1 (OJV 5), Test Grades, 2021

Remember that to pass the course, the overall average of your two tests and your final exam (which will be a written translation) must be more than 51 points. [So, for example, if you made an 80 on Test 1 and 20 on Test 2, then a 50 on the final exam, you would have accumulated 520 points which is a passing grade. If Test 1= 80, Test 2 = 20, Final Exam = 46, your total points would be 504 = 50.4, which is a failing grade.] The whole system is designed to reward the hardworking and to give leeway to those who don't really care or are too busy working to still pass.

Translation into English is only 50% of your overall grade in OJV X. 

I will offer a makeup exam on the day of the exam for those who would like to take ONE of the Tests again. There will be a sign-up sheet, so watch this space.

Fourth Year - Project Reminder

Dear Fourth Year,

Just a reminder that you need to send me an e-mail no later than 19h today, Friday, December 10, 2021 in order to receive your project text.

The projects are due not a minute later than 12 noon on Monday, December 13, 2021. Every hour you are late after that means one grade point less.

NOTE: the project must be done and turned in on time if you want to complete the semester. The make-up test will only be offered for those who could not come to the test today. In other words, you should do your project regardless of whether you were at the test.

If you still have not turned in your Kovačević text (Text 7) you may do so till this Sunday, December 12 by midnight. Even if we don't get to it this semester, we'll pick it up in the spring, and this will free you to think about and do other things over the holidays and winter break.

Reminder: Besides the assigned texts you get for homework, your second assignment for the semester is to translate all of the texts in the compendium, to bring them to class, ready to ask questions about possible alternate translations. Please be adults about this.

Here are the lists of the homework assignments with dates till the end of semester. The list is, of course, provisional. It will depend on our efficiency to see if we get everything done.

Third, here is the compendium of texts we will be working on, with the units clearly marked:

 Explanation: In the signup sheet, you'll see a set of columns with the units you are supposed to send me from your completed translations.

 The compendium of texts contains eight assignments we should try to finish by December 23. The texts have clearly marked units in them, the numbers are in square brackets [x], colored in red. That's how you'll know which assignment to prepare for which class. I will be keeping a record of whether you turn in your assignments. Please do your colleagues a service by turning in your work on time or even ahead of time.

 When I say "on time", the deadline for translations is on Tuesday at noon.

 Format: This is fairly simple. Compose and email with the subject line:

 OJV 5, Text x, Unit x

 Then just paste your translation unit directly into the email and send it to me.

 There is no need for niceties, no need for kind words (or unkind words), just a translation unit. Here is an example from last spring:

Classes for Nov 4 and 5

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

I apologize for the delay, but I have had some quite serious health issues over the last three weeks.

I am slowly getting better, but I wanted us to get started with our work.

Due to the situation, our work this semester will be done online, over Zoom. I will send the invitations in the next day or two.

We will be having classes this week, Third Year on Thursday, Fourth Year on Friday. I will prepare the classes so that you do not have any assignments for this week.

What is important for now: please check the lists in the links here. Make sure that your name is on them, and notify your classmates if you see they are missing.

Third Year: I have arbitrarily assigned you into groups. I know that some of you will need to change that because of other classes. Please do not worry. We can work it all out. I recommend that you find a coordinator among yourselves to ease communication with me so that I do not have 32 individual requests for changes, problems and so on. I will be posting the class description, the materials we will be working on, and an explanation of how we do it. I hope to do this in the next couple of days.

Fourth Year: You know the routine already, and we will continue working together successfully as we did last year.

Third and Fourth Year - About working via the internet now and after graduation

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

Many of you will be working (or are already working) as content writers, search engine optimizers, programmers and translators, call-center operators, and so forth.

If you don't know already, there's a struggle going on between the government and the Association of Internet Workers, which has already led to several protests and problematic meetings with the government. Long story short: the government is trying to impose an unfair tax system without benefits for internet workers.

There is a protest planned for this week on Wed-Thurs. If you plan to attend, you can get transportation to BG via the Association.

If any of you decide to go instead of taking the test on Thursday, remember there will be the possibility of taking a make-up test in June, of the same length and same difficulty.

Third and Fourth Year: Requirements and Instructions for the Courses

Dear Third and Fourth Years,

As I explained in class last week for those of you who were there, we seem to have had a misunderstanding.

If you will read the course descriptions once again, you’ll notice that it says that you have “one hour of homework per week”. This means that doing your homework is part of your responsibility.

Now, due to the nature of our classes, you have seen that it is necessary that those who have been assigned a particular unit for a given week actually turn in their work so that there is material for us to discuss. Last semester and this (so far), I assumed you understood it was a matter of common courtesy that you would turn in your homework (O, those two sentences!) when it came time for you to. Due to developments at the beginning of this semester (i.e., up to 42% of you not turning in your homework), it has come time to take new measures.

Your actual assignment for each week is to translate the whole text, on your own or with friends, and then come to class to ask about variant translations, things that could be said differently, other questions related to the text, and so on. However, I cannot control whether you a) translate the whole text, or b) attend class, nor do I intend to.

When you think about it, your minimal responsibility for the course is to a) take two tests, b) take the final exam, and c) translate a few sentences during the semester. Assuming you never translate a whole text and never come to class, if you do your assigned units, take the tests and the exam, your maximal time usage is 4 to 5 hours (not counting travel times, of course) for the entire semester. I don’t think, therefore, that it is asking too much for you to fulfill that minimum requirement.

As I told you last semester, one of the qualities which will be expected from you when you enter the work force is the ability to follow instructions precisely.

The instructions for these courses and submission of texts have already been laid out clearly on the Blog.

Therefore, starting this week, Monday, March 15, 2021, the following rules shall apply for work not turned in, work turned in too late, work done by means of Google Translate, and work submitted in the wrong format. The following points will be subtracted from your final grade at the end of the semester:

work not turned in: -5

work turned in after the deadline or done by GT: -3 (Reminder: You should send your assignments between the end of our last class and Tuesday the next week at 18h.)

work submitted in the wrong format: -1 (cf. post on Feb. 25)

work submitted with the wrong RE: line: -1 (cf. post on Feb. 25)

Now, I’m not an ogre or a tyrant. I know that these are extraordinary times, things happen. If, for some objective reason, you cannot turn in your work, a simple short email to me explaining the reason should suffice. Silence is not an option. If necessary, inform me through a classmate.

Please do at least the minimum, follow the instructions, pay attention to details, and all will be well.

Any deviation from this (including missing a deadline) will result in a lower final grade. 

Reminder: You should send your assignments between the end of our last class and Tuesday the next week at midnight. Your work during the semester is to translate each text in its entirety, so that you can ask questions in class about variations you think might be good (or not). We have plenty of time to answer questions.

I know these are trying times, but with persistence we can still complete at least some of the learning process, still establish a pleasant working atmosphere. For instance, my work is greatly facilitated when one or two of you turn on your cameras while we are conferencing, because I can see your reactions. It reminds me that I'm talking to people and not a list of rectangles on a computer screen.

Third Year - Texts and Assignments

I would remind you that your assigned texts are due no later than Tuesday at 18h each week. Your grade will be diminished if you fail to meet the deadline. 

While you can do the translations ahead of time (tomorrow, for instance), I would ask you not to send them before the previous class has been finished and the next class is to be held. So, if we are finishing Text 1 on Thursday, send your (assigned) Text 2 by Tuesday at 18h the next week.

Schedule for OJV 8, Fridays

Dear Fourth Year,

In order to make things a little more efficient, I would recommend the following schedule for our Tr>En 4 (OJV 8) classes:

Group A: 9-11

Group B: 11- 13

We will take a five minute break during those classes, after 40-50 minutes, so that we don't all turn into Zoombies.

I would also kindly ask you to try and spread yourselves a little more equitably between the groups. Today we had ca. 30 in the first group and 6 in the second.

Third and Fourth Year -- Classes on Feb. 18 and 19

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

I am still assembling the materials for our classes this semester, trying to put a slightly different spin on them.

On Thursday, for the Third Year, we will only have the lecture at 12. Check here for the link. This will be a good time for us to re-organize ourselves a little bit.

On Friday, for the Fourth Year, class will meet at the appointed times, but won't last long, perhaps half an hour.
