Third and Fourth Year Announcement
Dear Third- and Fourth-Year Students,
After thinking things through, I’ve decided NOT to have
face-to-face classes with you this semester. These are not normal times, and we
shouldn’t pretend that they are. I’m very sorry not to see my (beloved) Fourth
Year, and not getting to know (in person) the Third Year (to become beloved).
But it would mean that most of you would get on some sort of public
transportation, showing up in a building full of possible virus vectors, and
listening/talking to me through a rather thick, garbling face-mask. It seems to
me to be in violation of reason/science and our common good.
I value you, your health, and your families. I’m sorry if
this causes you any inconvenience.
All my very best wishes,
Randall
Fourth Year - Stuff and Things for Classes
Dear Fourth Year (Tr>En3/OJV 7) Students,
.
I 've worked most of it out.
First, here is a copy of the Class Description:
Second, here are the roll sheets, with your text assignments:
Third, here is the compendium of texts we will be working on, with the units clearly marked:
Explanation: In the roll sheets, you will see your name in the group where you signed up. Next to that, you'll see a set of columns with the units you are supposed to send me from your completed translation. In Group 1, at least two of you will be sending me the same unit, Text x, Unit x. So, in Group 1, Bajic and Vukovic will be sending me Text 2, Unit 1 for this week. Zelenbabic and Jeric will send me Text 1, Unit 2, and so on. On the basis of your translations, I will prepare the class, so this will be just like you going to the board to write out your translations. The same is with Group 2, but because of the small numbers, one student will be turning in a unit.
The compendium of texts contains eight assignments we should try to finish by December 18. The texts have clearly marked units in them, the numbers are in square brackets [x], colored in red. That's how you'll know which assignment to prepare for which class. I will be keeping a record of whether you turn in your assignments. Please do your colleagues a service by turning in your work on time or even ahead of time.
When I say "on time", the deadline for Text 2 translations is Thursday, October 29, at noon. For the rest of the semester, the deadline will always be Wednesday at noon.
On a different topic, some of your generation has not registered in groups. Please let your colleagues know about this blog, and the obligations they have for the course. Some of you have tried to send me different emails than the ones the FF has for you. This will be resolved automatically when you send in your first assignments.
Regardless of which one of my email accounts you receive email from, please send all assignments, requests, and questions to: randall.major@ff.uns.ac.rs
Please watch this space for the Zoom invitations.
Peace!
Randall

Third and Fourth Year - a Humble Request
Dear Third and Fourth Year,
Okay, we got through the first online sessions of the semester.
I think this is a period when we need to show optimal kindness and respect for each other, and to do our best to make things better when so much is going wrong outside.
All right, and from my perspective, to inject as much humor as we can into the whole situation. Not take ourselves so damn seriously, unless really necessary.
My humble request of you is this: if you have any suggestions as to how to make our sessions more productive and interesting, please e-mail me at:
randall.major@ff.uns.ac.rs
Your suggestions are welcome (and private) and will in no way affect your grades or whatever. Since I can't "read the audience" (=I can't see your faces), I don't know if you're laughing, rolling your eyes in defeat, doing the laundry, or whatever. So, please use my email as a private way to react, if you feel so inclined.
Let's try to make this situation into something positive!
Stay safe! Please, please take care of yourselves and those you love.

Third Year Welcome!
Welcome to your junior year at the university!
I'm sorry that scheduling will not allow us to meet before November (if then!), and that we have to get introduced in this way.
For this week's class, we will all meet at 12 o'clock tomorrow (Oct. 22) in a Zoom meeting. I will explain the way the classes work and talk a little bit about our F2F meetings in November.
Essentially, you'll be given a set of short texts to translate and we will go through them in the practice classes. Starting next week, we will use the 12 o'clock hour to talk about Translation Studies as a discipline. There will be a comprehensive test over those lectures at the end of the spring semester.
For your grade this semester, we will have two written tests, translations of short texts. In the meantime, each week we will be going over the translations you are assigned, talking about them in an organized way. I will be sending you a course description and the compendium of texts we will be working on during the semester.
I know that some of you are taking AmLit with Prof. Izgarjan. Therefore, I will ask you to sign up at the link below. If you are not taking her course, please sign up for Group 1, which will be meeting on Thursdays at 10:30-12. If you are taking her course, please sign up for Group 2, which will be meeting on Thursdays from 13-14:15. If your name is not on the list, please add it.
And here is the invitation for tomorrow's meeting:

Fourth Year - Oct-Dec 2020
Dear Fourth Year!
Welcome back to the wonderful world of virtual education!
We need to organize our classes somehow. I'm attaching a link to a sign up sheet. I know that some of you have simultaneous classes with Prof. Bodric. So, just sign in for the appropriate time so I'll know who to expect and when.
As opposed to last semester, which was a bit of a shock to all of us, we'll try to do things differently this time around. I'll schedule Zoom (or google meet) meetings for Fridays, except when we have F2F classes in November. I'll be asking you to send in your translations ahead of time, and then we'll discuss them just like we used to in class. More on that later.
But for now, please sign up (put 1 or 2 in the last column), and prepare the following text for Friday
And here are the links for groups 1 and 2 this Friday, October 23:
We'll talk more about the F2F meetings then.
And here's the text for Friday:
See you then!
