Third Year - Test 3 (Theoretical) - grades

Dear Third Year,

Here are the results from your third test:

If you want to sign up for the makeup test, you should do so before Tuesday, June 4 at midnight. You must have two translation and a theoretical test to pass the course. You can only take ONE makeup test on June 6.

If you want to take the test, send an email with the subject line "Third Year Makeup" and then either "Translation" or "Theoretical" depending on what kind of test you want to take. There is no need to write a further message

So, for example:
From: Duck Donald@yippetydoodah.org
CC:
Subject: Third Year Makeup - Theoretical

The test will be held after the fourth year finishes their exam on June 6, so around 15:50.

Looking forward to seeing you on June 6!
Peace,
Randall

Dear Third Year,

Here is a link to the grades from your second test:

Tr>En2 - Test 2 results, 2019

If you would like to look at your tests, I will be in my office tomorrow at 13:00.

N.B. - If you wish to take the makeup test, you will be able to do so on the day of the exam, June 6, after the 4th year has finished their exam. Please note: you must have TWO handwritten translation tests, and ONE theoretical test to pass the course. On June the 6, you will have the opportunity to take only ONE makeup test, so your choices are clear. After you get your grades back from Test 3, there will be a sign up. Please remember that the TR>EN2 course is only 50% of your OJV grade for the semester.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at 11:55, same old place.

More updates

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

Third Year,

Because of an important departmental meeting, Group A will start tomorrow at 10:45 and go to noon. You will have your final theoretical lecture from 12 to 12:45. Group B will start on time. We will finish the work we didn't get done last week (Paunovic) and go over the materials from Group A as well. Your third test is still scheduled for Thursday, May 30 at 12, no classes that day.

Fourth Year,
On Friday, May 24, I will be giving you a parallel text which exemplifies the importance of word choice in translation into English, and two short lectures to wrap up our time together.

Your makeup test is scheduled for 10:45 on May 31, no classes during the study week.

Exams remained scheduled as per the previous post.

See you then!

Updates

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

I understand there is some confusion, and I want to be crystal clear about things and stuff.

Third Year:

You'll have your second test tomorrow (May 16) at 12. It will be a written translation, just like the first one.
In class we will be translating the text on the Doors.
Your third test, about Translation Theory, will be on Thursday, May 30 at 12 o'clock. There will be no class that week because it's a reading week (exam preparation time).
Your exam is scheduled for June 6 at 14h. It will take 45 minutes. It will multiple choice, short answer, a combination of communication theory, translation theory, and work on the texts we've done in class.

Fourth Year:

You'll have your second test on Friday, May 17 at 11. It will be a written translation, just like the first one. There will be no classes that day because of my duty to answer a court summons (I'll just be a witness, don't expect me to end up in stripes).
Your exam is scheduled for June 6 at 15h. It will be a combination of multiple choice and sort answers. The Serbian authors we've talked about for two years now will be a part of that exam (questions like: Name 3 living male Serbian authors and a book they've written).

See you soon!

Third and Fourth Year - Test Grades

Dear Third and Fourth Years,

I finally started feeling better yesterday and promptly crawled out of bed to grade your tests from O, So Long Ago. I apologize for the delay!

TR>EN 2 (Third Year) - Test 1, April 2019

TR>EN 4 (Fourth Year) - Test 1, April 2019

I will be showing you your tests at our next class meeting, if you want to see them.

Also, for the THIRD YEAR: Here's that link I promised you for the text about translating into your L2. We will be talking about it at 12 on May 9. You need to be familiar with the MOST important concepts from the article for our discussion.

Translating into your L2

Test 2 for the Third Year will be held on May 16 at 12 o'clock.
Test 2 for the Fourth Year will be held on May 17 at 11 o'clock.

Meanwhile, Happy Easter to those who already celebrated it, or are about to celebrate it. And also Happy International Day of Workers to those who celebrate that (I could go on with St. George's Day, Mother's Day, and so on, but you get the point.)

Wishing you health and happiness, see you soon!

Thursday and Friday Classes - Study Week

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

Since you reminded me that it is study week, I'll respond in kind:

Third Year: There will be no classes at 10:30 and 12:45. Your test will begin promptly at 12. Don't be late. It is a hand written translation, nothing to study for.

Fourth Year: Since you elected to have no classes, I would ask you to all come in one group at 11 for the handwritten test.

I hope this suits all of you. If not we'll work something out.

Reminders, Clarifications, and Ideas

Dear Third and Fourth Years,

Addressing some of your concerns:

In this week's classes (March 21, 22) we will pick up where we left off (so, Vampires, Europe in the the 19th century, Dusan Matic, life the universe and everything...). There will NOT be a test this week, for either year.

You can expect that your first mid-semester translation test will be given NEXT week (March 28,29 - handwritten translation), at 12 on Thursday for the third year, at the beginning of class for the fourth year on Friday.

Finally, for those of you in the fourth year who are predisposed to think about things a little bit, I offer you the following links, starting from the simplest to those a bit more complicated, but all very thought-provoking (also, one of the most straight-forward and clear explanations of string theory "for dummies" like myself that I've ever heard):

On how the red-shift has helped us understand what's happening to us:

On what is the "nothing" that we are headed for:

On string theory (2005), and how it turned out to be at least partially true at CERN:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF4ju6j6aLE
the Higgs Boson!
And for a little fun, here's Nick Cave and his take on this whole mess:

Classes this week (March 14-15)

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

First to the third year, my deep apologies for today. I got on the bus in the morning and was so nauseous that I had to get off and return home. Some sort of bug or food poisoning, don't know.
Fourth year, better if we don't have classes tomorrow, March 15, just in case this is some sort of virus, and anyway I'm still not feeling well.
We'll pick up where we left off next week in both cases.
Peace!

Third Year - Reading Assignment 1

Dear Third Year,

Here is a link to an article about the Introduction to Translation:

Your task is to read and outline the text by Thursday, March 7, 2019, and be ready to discuss it in our "theory lecture". You will be called upon to give the summary points, and we will discuss them in our usual jovial/serious fashion. Any additional thoughts or questions that might occur to you as you read are more than welcome in the discussion.

Wishing you all the best in the new semester,
Randall

Dear Third and Fourth Year,

These are the instructions for your (possible) makeup tests. Follow them carefully!

1) The makeup tests will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2018 at 16h (not 17h as previously stated), in room 107.
2) If you are in the Third Year (that is, you are taking TR>EN 1) and want/need to take a makeup test, you should send an email to randall.major@ff.uns.ac.rs as soon as possible. In the subject line you should write:

Registration for the makeup tests is obligatory. You should do so before Tuesday, Jan. 22 by 12 noon (just so I'll know how many copies of the tests and of what kind to bring).

4th Year End of Semester Stuff

Dear Fourth Year,

I hope you all had a marvelous new year celebration.
For the last class in the semester, a couple of reminders:
1) Bring/send your translation journal for our class on Jan. 18. They will be checked at that time.
2) For that same class, we'll be finishing the Selenic text (number 7), and will at least start on text number 10 (Dusan Matic, the one about the tadpole's tail...).

For those of you who celebrate, Христос се роди, for all of you Cрећна ноба година!

See you soon!

Peace!
